Born in Los Angeles California in 1933, Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann was ordained a Maryknoll priest and through the 1970s was a teacher, writer and liberation theologian. After Pope John Paul II had refuted liberation theology, Brockmann joined the Sandinistas movement and later government of Nicaragua and became foreign minister. He was later disciplined by the church for joining politics and was stripped of his priestly duties and privileges.

From September 2008-2009 Brockmann was President of the 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The largely ceremonial post is passed from one region of the world to another.
