Compliance is a Big Deal
In industry after industry, compliance is an increasingly humbling requirement of doing business.
Simply recalling pictures and newspaper accounts of the absurdity of the richest man in the world reading emails he had written with no intention of every entering them into evidence at an anti-trust trial, make me shudder and wince. It was horrible. Can you imagine?
That's why I never write flaming emails or write critiques of other people's work without including them. Some people don't do this. I'm sure you know of folks who Clearly, people use email in ways that it can hurt your credibility, integrity and even cost them their jobs.
One of the reasons that Enron executives are only now facing legal action is their wanton destruction of documents and lax storage of emails etc, made it incredibly more difficult to track wrong-doing. That's probably the biggest reason that Arthur Anderson is no more.
