Telecom Italia drops UMA

[[UMA]], which had been a choice of mobile operator early-adopters (in UK – Orange , in USA T-Mobile) is being discontinued in Italy.

Although dead UMA is the case in Italy, the UMA market may not be dead, yet. Light Reading reports that's because TI's limited commercial UMA implementation launched only at the beginning of the year was ordered by the regulator to be made available in a wholesale option so that mobile competitors could provide a similar service.

The operator re-launched a few weeks ago (in October) the Unica service based on SIP as part of a quadruple play offering. The locally-developed client is loaded onto dual-mode devices which determine which network (WiFi or cellular) is best able to support the call.

This new service does not support voice call continuity or other handoff techniques.  It is only available on the Nokia E65 today.
