Earlier this week, CounterPath and NEC jointly announced the NEC-branded Smart Mobile Client R2.2.

The new mobile VoIP client introduces a new smartphone client (previous NEC mobile UC offering is based on Varaha’s uMobility solution) for BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Mobile that provides telephony, voicemail access, corporate directory services, presence, instant messaging and conferencing services over both cellular and WiFi network interfaces. Support for iPhone and Android is provided through a web interface.

The questions that I would like to have answered are:

  • Pricing?
  • Availability?
  • How this announcement compares to the Varaha-based solution? Were there segments not addressed that this will fill?
  • Will it affect the currently available solution?
